You see, I think that people are divided into 2 categories Internet-wise:
those that started to use the net before the year 2k and those that started after.
The age doesn’t matter. The Internet was different, and people’s attitude towards it was different. We can argue whether it was better or worse and enter the never-ending loop, but if there’s one thing I would need to point out - it would be anonymity.

Yes, each and everyone those days (which by the way, was only 10-15 years ago) knew for a fact that Internet is a virtual place, where you can be anonymous, you can be whoever you want to be and you can actually say whatever you want to say. That’s why IRC was so huge, that’s why forums were huge, that’s why ICQ was huge and so on.

Yep, back in those days it was all about communicating. Well, not all. We loved surfing the web too. And exploring the new software… and what not.
But communicating was the key aspect. And the key aspect of communicating was… that’s right - anonymity.

It was the only chance for us to actually not start judging the person by his looks, but to get to know him. Back in those days you would only own a digital pic on your PC if you or your friend had a scanner, which wasn’t true in most cases, so we actually talked. Do you remember the meaning of this word? Talking? Oh, you think you do. Well, in any case, I just want to state that IM/facebook/tweet/and what not - is not actually talking. That’s just plain garbage.

Anyway, I don’t wanna get too nostalgic here. So what happened in the year 2k? Well, the broadband. And that brought us millions, tens and hundreds of millions of new users. And when this kinda numbers enters something, the money follows. Suddenly it was all about the money. Ads, flash banners, enormous amounts of porn, pointless games, etc.

But that wasn’t enough. Enter Google. Oh, how we love this company! No sarcasm here, by the way. But while we do love it, we often forget (probably because it wants us to) that it’s all about the money. Shocking? An American corporation doing anything in its powers to earn more money? No way!
So they brought the Adsense and we loved it. We were so tired of the flashing crap on our screens that Firefox with Adblock turned an overnight success. And there we had it: just small targeted text ads. It was beautiful.

But then everyone started doing it and before we knew it - it was all about the information for those ads. Yep, they needed the info for a better target. Understandable. Gmail was not enough. So it came in a form of social networking. The idea was brilliant! Mask it as a social service to share crap with your friends while revealing everything about yourself voluntarily. And the governments jumped on board, since they couldn’t even dream about this kinda big brother utopia. And here you have it: almost a billion people are voluntarily sharing their most private info with anyone interested.

Advertisers are having the times of their lives, governments are happier than ever and people… they don’t even understand the consequences of their actions.

Anyway, I don’t feel like getting into all the downsides of a public profile, but I will say this: Google is a company that can do whatever it feels like and it’s not obligated to anyone. But each and everyone of us has a choice - just like Schmidt said. Meanwhile I’m using a fake name. There is no way I’m gonna give them my real one. I started using G+ much less because of their policy. If I get a notice to change my name - I’m out for good.

Identity service my ass, Schmidt. Internet is just that - Internet. Maybe people should start thinking about that. We live offline. Online leisure, which is G+, is nothing but a virtual reality. Treat it like one.

After looking into it a bit more, I realised that this error started showing after the gateway change I had recently. Apparently, something gets screwed and the line in resolv.conf starts to read “search servername.domainname.com”(example of course), when it should only read domainname.com

After deleting the “servername” part it was all fine again.

So if you’re a firefox user, do yourself a favour:
about:config

network.dns.disableIPv6 

double click it to enable

and you won’t see the “looking up” status for longer than a second instead of 3 seconds it usually takes.

additionally, make these true:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining

change this one to “20“:

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

and add this:

nglayout.initialpaint.delay

with a string value of “0”

Why? Because it gives you the option to choose exactly how social you want to be. I won’t be covering the whole thing as many have done so already, but the option to create and manage the circles, choose what stream to read, follow whoever you want and all the sharing/privacy settings are really doing it for me. Plus, the beautiful interface is really nailing it.

I never had a facebook account because of all the critically missing features. And now I have finally created a new google account to enter the social networking world.

But giving the whole thing is rather new, the interface (beautiful and functional it is) is missing some features. Enter extensions developers to solve our problems. The weird thing is that firefox has less extensions for this. But for me it actually worked pretty good, since one thing firefox can’t do is have multiple google sessions opened in different tabs. And since I didn’t want to have G+ on my regular account and created a new one just for this - I’d be forced to log on and off constantly, which, of course, is not the greatest web experience.

So I enter the G+ from chrome. And if you do it too, here are some essential extensions for better experience:

Basically, it really gives you the option to enter it all into the database and give you the visual of any of your equipment via the Web GUI.
The software is really simple. And the only hassle is to actually put it all in.
The installation is described on the website and is done in 5 minutes.

The only thing it will not you do is visual diagram of your network, but there are other applications for that.

A must for IT folks.

The RAID controller is 3ware 9650se and after reading the manual it seemed pretty simple: delete the RAID1, have the spare drives and do the RAID6 migration to include them. After the initialization(is this the right word?) I was supposed to have the 25-26TB of space instead of the existing 22.

And so it was. Well, almost. After everything was finished I saw the new empty space in the Openfiler’s web gui: 3775GB or something like that. But the thing was that when trying to create the new volume it would create a ridiculous 4MB thingy, although I entered the max size. After fiddling with this for a bit I realised I can’t risk the data (all the company’s docs and files) any further and it was decided to make a clean start. So I transferred them all to the backup storage and started playing.

By the way, one other thing that made me want to reinstall the OS was the fact that there was some problem with the last updates which were sometime in 2008. I know this because I already tried updating the backup storage before that (a month ago) and completely messed it up. I ended up installing fresh OS and updating it - it went smooth. And since I needed some of the updates badly it was in my interest anyway to do this.

If you care about what updates I needed so badly, it was the samba update. Apparently, win7 has some upgraded mechanisms of authentication, so if you try accessing the openfiler’s shares from win7 by name - all goes well, but if you do this by IP - you’ll end up entering the credentials over and over again - loop that never ends. There is a fix - you just need to uncheck a couple of boxes on the windows machine, but when you have more than one of those - it just makes sense to upgrade the Openfiler.
The solution for win7 is:
Go to: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy
Select: Local Policies -> Security Options
There are two settings to change.
“Network security: LAN Manager authentication level” -> Send LM & NTLM responses
“Minimum session security for NTLM SSP” -> uncheck: Require 128-bit encryption

Anyway, back to me. Formatted the OS drive, installed, updated and configured. And all that only to find out that nothing’s changed partition-wise. I still saw all the data partition: 22TB of previous partitions and 3.7TB of the new empty space. Trying to create a partition ends in 4MB. WTF?!

So it’s not the OS. Re-read the user guide from 3ware - not that many options to make mistakes. What then? The Openfiler’s forums never mentioned anything like this. So I decided that since I have the backup I should just delete the RAID and start the data partition from scratch. It was pretty sucky because I knew that I’ll have to restore the data afterwards - at least 6TB for now. That’s another week working on the backup. Oh, well…

So here we go, 3ware web gui, remove the unit, create new unit, initialize. Meanwhile access the Openfiler’s gui, see the 26TB space, create the 26TB partition. Wait, WHAT?! 22TB?!

This is where I was about to loose it. Mostly because it was so unexpected: I was supposed to be done twice by then.
Now, as you might know, if you want to have a more than 2TB partition on Linux you have to label it GPT. Otherwise it defaults to MSDOS label. I knew that because I learned it the first time I created this storage 3 years ago. You have to ssh into the machine and run

parted /dev/sdX
mklabel gpt
quit

replace the X with the right letter, of course.
Now, here’s the thing: I didn’t do it this time and yet it did recognize the 20+TB. How’s that? Maybe the partition wasn’t really deleted although the RAID was removed and recreated.

fdisk -l

showed me that the partition was in fact GPT.
So I ran parted and saw this (syntax):

 mklabel LABEL-TYPE         create a new disklabel (partition table)

This is when it hit me - the partition table didn’t change despite the fact that RAID was destroyed. Or was it…?
Anyway, a simple new

mklabel gpt

on this drive solved all of my problems. Of course, by then all of the data was destroyed, but I was ready for it and hopefully by the end of this week our office will be back on the main storage.

Hope it’ll help someone not to loose it when dealing with this.

There are few solutions. For every OS actually. Some are scripts, some are add-ons, some are apps. At first I installed the tnef program from the repositories in Ubuntu, but it did nothing, so instead of starting digging I just installed the LookOut add-on for Thunderbird and voila! I see the original pdf as the attachment.

However, if an off-site server needs to be access via Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client immediately, yet the Remote Desktop is not enabled on the server, then it will be a headache. Luckily it’s possible to remotely enable the Remote Desktop service on a remote PC or server by remotely editing its registry.

To remotely enable Remote Desktop on another computer, follow these steps:

1. Login to the workstation with administrator credentials.
2. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
3. Click on File menu.
4. Select the Connect Network Registry in the pull down menu.
5. A “Select Computer” dialog search box is opened. Type the host name of the remote computer in the text box, or browse Active Directory to locate the remote server, or click on “Advanced” button to search for the remote computer.
6. Click OK after the remote computer is selected. A node for the remote computer network registry will be displayed in the Registry Editor with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) and HKEY_USERS (HKU) hives.
7. Navigate to the following registry key for the remote computer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server
8. In the right pane, locate a REG_DWORD value named fDenyTSConnection. Double-click on fDenyTSConnection and change the value data from 1 (Remote Desktop disabled) to 0 (Remote Desktop enabled).

That’s it.
