Thoughts on G+
Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 | Author: Ozzik

So Google+ is nearly 3 months old now. And I have an account for almost 3 months. But since this happened - I’m not so sure I wanna keep it.

Schmidt said that Google+ was built primarily as an identity service and that those worried about using their real names shouldn’t use the service

You see, I think that people are divided into 2 categories Internet-wise:
those that started to use the net before the year 2k and those that started after.
The age doesn’t matter. The Internet was different, and people’s attitude towards it was different. We can argue whether it was better or worse and enter the never-ending loop, but if there’s one thing I would need to point out - it would be anonymity.

DNS resolving in Openfiler
Thursday, August 04th, 2011 | Author: Ozzik

Just a small issue I had today.
Since I run rsync scripts at night and get email about their execution, I noticed that email came with:

ssh: Could not resolve hostname SERVERNAME: Name or service not known
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(635) [receiver=3.0.3]

Make firefox faster
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 | Author: Ozzik

While I understand the importance of the whole IPv6 thing, I think we’re not quite there yet and we’re definitely not supposed to suffer browsing the web!

So if you’re a firefox user, do yourself a favour:
about:config

network.dns.disableIPv6

double click it to enable

Google+ chrome extensions
Saturday, July 16th, 2011 | Author: Ozzik

How weird would that be if I wasn’t trying out the new Google+, being a tech guy and all.
And while I hate the concept of the social networking, I actually do like the new thing.

Why? Because it gives you the option to choose exactly how social you want to be. I won’t be covering the whole thing as many have done so already, but the option to create and manage the circles, choose what stream to read, follow whoever you want and all the sharing/privacy settings are really doing it for me. Plus, the beautiful interface is really nailing it.

Elegant Gnome Pack
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 | Author: Ozzik

Finally, after 6 years of using Linux, found a satisfying theme pack: Elegant Gnome Pack
The only problem that I have with it is the gray icons that look very much the same - a bit confusing. Otherwise, been using it for about a month now - absolutely great, easy on the eyes, very elegant. 2 thumbs up!

Dealing with winmail.dat on Linux
Friday, October 08th, 2010 | Author: Ozzik

Hey,
if you’re a bit old-fashioned like me you’re still using a desktop mail client like Thunderbird and not web interface, like Gmail.
But sometimes there are glitches. And while some of them are client related, others are well - MS fault.
Like this one. For some time now I’ve been getting some emails from the same source with an attached winmail.dat file. There was no way to open it and frankly, knowing the source, I didn’t care too much.
But a few days ago I logged in to Gmail’s web interface and saw the actual file behind it - it was a pdf. Now, when I can’t get a pdf by email, I start to get a bit nervous. So I googled it and came to a conclusion that it’s, of course, MS fault. See, their outlook sends out some emails in tnef format, which can’t be read by some clients.

There are few solutions. For every OS actually. Some are scripts, some are add-ons, some are apps. At first I installed the tnef program from the repositories in Ubuntu, but it did nothing, so instead of starting digging I just installed the LookOut add-on for Thunderbird and voila! I see the original pdf as the attachment.
Now, in case it doesn’t work for you, maybe you should try this:

Hope it helps!

Subsonic streaming server on FreeNAS
Saturday, November 28th, 2009 | Author: Ozzik

Today I decided to share my experience of installing the Subsonic streaming server on FreeNAS.
Why Subsonic? Well, it’s nice looking, it’s free, it can play any format and it uses a web-based player.

Most of the info I took from this post.
Before I start, I wanna mention that I’m using the latest FreeNAS version, which is 0.7, based on FreeBSD 7. This is important, because I don’t know whether lame will work in other versions.

Linux vs. Windows - my 2 cents
Sunday, November 01st, 2009 | Author: Ozzik

Hey,

So as you ALL know - Ubuntu 9.10 is out. Also, as you ALL know - Win7 is out. Actually, so is Snow Leopard, but I’m not an apple fanboy, so I don’t care much about that.

If you google any of these 2 words (win7 and ubuntu), you’ll find 7 billion posts telling you about all the new features, bug fixes, comparisons between the previous versions and of course, the most popular topic is the comparison between these two OS’s. And the most obnoxious eternal question is “Will this Ubuntu version be the windows killer?”
windows-vs-ubuntu
And since I’m being asked about this topic once every few days myself, I decided to post my personal opinion on this. Don’t expect it to be too objective, cuz I’m obviously a Linux fan. But don’t expect me to defend it no matter what, too.

First of all, if you’ve read my previous posts, you’d know that I’m using Linux Mint 7, based on Ubuntu 9.04. Plus, I run win7 in VirtualBox. I should also tell you that I only tried Ubuntu 9.10 for 15 minutes running in VMWare server on WinXP at work, so I don’t have much to say about this particular version. I’m waiting for Mint 8, since I like its polishing better than original Ubuntu’s.

So I’ll rather express my opinion regarding the general Linux vs. Windows issue than Ubuntu 9.10 vs. Win7.

Azureus/Vuze hangs on new torrents
Monday, October 19th, 2009 | Author: Ozzik

This morning I woke up and first thing I did was finding and starting to download the new “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode. Imagine my surprise when instead of actually starting, Azureus (now Vuze) turned grey (I have compiz installed) and hanged. I repeated the process, re-downloaded the torrent - no success.

From the comments on mininova I realized I wasn’t the only one. The guys suggested to upgrade Azureus, so I did. Restarted - nothing, it just hangs the minute you open this specific torrent.

So I went to eztv.it, which is the original releaser of the torrent and saw a topic regarding the issue. The topic linked to the azureus’ FAQ, which said that they do know about the recent problem and they did release a fix, so all you have to do is upgrade. But I did that already!

So the other suggestion they had is to turn off this option:
Tools–>Options–>Connection: Uncheck the “Prompt for selection when a download with an anonymous tracker is added”. Well, that did the trick!
Hope it helps someone.

Ozzik.
