Expand RAID6 with 3ware and Openfiler
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 | Author: Ozzik

Hey,
Had some problems last week with expanding the RAID6 I have on a storage with Openfiler. This is what was needed to be done:
I have a storage with 16 hard drives for storage+2 for the OS. When I built it almost 3 years ago the idea was to have 1 RAID6 with 14 drives and 1 RAID1 with 2 drives obviously. Don’t ask me why - it was stupid to begin with and thus was never really used (the RAID1 that is). But came the time when we needed that additional space of 2 drives and the decision was to cancel the RAID1 and add the spare drives to the main RAID6, expanding the existing space.

The RAID controller is 3ware 9650se and after reading the manual it seemed pretty simple: delete the RAID1, have the spare drives and do the RAID6 migration to include them. After the initialization(is this the right word?) I was supposed to have the 25-26TB of space instead of the existing 22.

Join Openfiler to Active Directory
Saturday, December 13th, 2008 | Author: Ozzik

As promised, the guide for joining of Openfiler to Active Directory.
And a small part of getting in to make a Homedir for every user (not yet tried by me though).
Most of this guide is copied from rossignol’s guide on the forums.
This document was created for use with Openfiler 2.3 final.
Test domain machine is dcnbn.ds. trotfqdn.ab.ca
This document is case sensitive.

Legend:
dcnbn = domain controler’s netbios name
ds = domain short name
trotfqdn.ab.ca = the rest of the fully qualified domain name.ab.ca
ofnbn = openfiler box’s netbios name

Installation guide is pretty good on the openfiler’s homepage

Openfiler issues
Monday, December 01st, 2008 | Author: Ozzik

So I decided to dedicate this first post to some stuff that’s been going on for the past week at work.
We decided to exchange all of our old “Lacie” and “Infrant” NAS units for one normal storage. Finally!
So we bought a white box server, and I set it up with Openfiler OS. Basically, I’m a FreeNAS fan, but the 64bit version is still in alpha stage, so I went for Openfiler, which already is 64bit. (It has to support the 16GB of RAM). Anyway, I don’t remember too many complications at the installation stage, except for the “msdos” and “gpt” issue: had to change the partition label to “gpt” for partitions of more than 2TB(done via parted).
Also, I’ll try to remember posting a “join openfiler to Active Directory domain” guide, as it’s really not that trivial. I’m lucky someone already did that part and published it on the forum.
But what I did have a hell week with was another issue. 2 actually.
First, for some project I was asked to open a share via http/WebDAV protocol, which was supposed to be a two clicks thingy, but turned out to be a 2 days hell.
